X- Type Gearbox Oil Change. For those that haven't seen this months Jaguar World (March 2. I placed a question in thier magazine regarding the issue relating to changing the oil in the auto gearbox.
I thought you may like to see the reply. QUESTION: I have sometimes read of X- Type owners changing the oil in their auto gearboxes; I believe these are suppose to be 'sealed for life' units but realistically, can one expect the oil to last that long? Surely over time and wear, the oil will deteriorate in consistancy. I believe there is a way that this can be done, but I don't know whether this is a job that can be done by an amateur mechanic or whether it needs to go to a specialist? I have spoken to my local Jaguar service centre and they have informed me that they have never done it nor would they recommend it.

The suggestion is "if it's not broken, why fix it?" Can you advise me further on this? REPLY: No Jaguar dealer will recommend changing the transmission fluid due to the overall policy that these units are sealed for life, a life we all know can be considerably shortened by dirty fluid, even though servicing the box will invalidate any remaining warranty. There is also a further consideration that once internal wear has reached an advanced state, any disturbance can often induce a failure, this is why many independent specialists are also reluctant to do the job through the fear of being liable for a full rebuild a few weeks or months down the line. If performed in time, regular fluid and filter changes can extend the life of the transmission, but ultimately it is the owner of the car who is taking the risk and therefore must accept any untoward consequences.
So the moral of the story is that you are dammed if you do or dammed if you don't!!!! However, heres a point, if the gearbox does fail and can be proved that this is due no oil changes taking place, will Jaguar have to replace the gearbox F. O. C. even though the 'box could be well be out of warranty Has anyone had any experiences of this??
